Although
70% of Americans say they would prefer to die at home*, there
are times when this is not possible. For instance,
~
A patient has few relatives or friends, and no one is available
to be the primary caregiver responsible for 24-hour care.
~
The primary caregiver of a patient is elderly themselves, and
despite all good intentions is unable to provide the level of
care needed in the home.
~
Some diseases, and some particular cases, require intense hands-on
medical care that isn’t available in a home.
The
Hospice Room at Eden Park was created by Brattleboro Area Hospice
and Eden Park Nursing Home for occasions such as these. Originally
designed as a four-bed room, it has been transformed into a
one-patient space with the cozy atmosphere of a small studio
apartment. The room has been designed with all the comforts
of a home, including a furnished kitchenette, a dining and living
area with beds for family members to stay overnight, cable television
and VCR, and a private telephone.
In
addition to end-of-life care, The Hospice Room is also available
for respite stays of up to 7 days, allowing primary caregivers
time for physical rest, a psychological break, or to travel
and attend a family gathering such as a wedding.
