Giving to Hospice
Your donations are an essential part of our support!
Brattleboro Area Hospice is an independent, community-based, non-profit volunteer hospice organization. United Way provides a portion of our budget; the balance comes from local towns, individual donations and memorials, grants and our thrift store. Financial contributions of any size are appreciated and are tax-deductible.

Giving Now:
The simplest donation is an immediate donation of cash or property. Brattleboro Area Hospice can accept cash, checks and credit card donations as well as shares of stock, mutual funds and other investments. Your gift will be tax deductible to the limit of the law. You may send your check to:
Brattleboro Area Hospice, 199 Canal Street, Brattleboro VT 05301
How to Donate Stock: You might prefer to donate stock, mutual funds, or other investments. These often carry greater tax advantages for the donor. Remember a primary guideline: if you are donating appreciated assets you will accomplish a greater tax deduction if you donate the shares to Hospice. A donation of an appreciated asset will incur no capital gains tax for you, and will be tax deductible at fair market value. If your donated assets have declined in value you will prefer to sell the shares and donate the proceeds to Hospice. Please go to How To Donate Stock, for instructions.
Memorial Gifts: Brattleboro Area Hospice welcomes gifts in memory and in honor of your family members, friends, and neighbors. These gifts may be in any size and any form. Please let us know how you would like to acknowledge your gift, including an address to notify the family or the honoree.
Giving Later: By remembering Brattleboro Area Hospice in your will, or including us in your estate planning, you can help further our work.
A Bequest:
When you write your will, or any time you choose to update it with a codicil, you can include a gift to Brattleboro Hospice. This can take one of several forms:
- A specific dollar amount
- A specific percentage of your estate
- All, or a portion, of the ‘residual’ assets in your estate after your other heirs have been cared for.
You should be able to do this at any time, working with your own attorney. It does not require writing an entirely new will. Please be sure you include the full legal name.
A Retirement Fund Gift:
You can name Brattleboro Area Hospice as one of the beneficiaries of your IRA or other retirement plans, simply by revising your beneficiary forms. Most plans will contact you regularly to ask about updating beneficiaries, and you can do it then or at any time of your choosing. Because many IRA’s require tax payments by individual beneficiaries, you might decide to gift some or all of it to Brattleboro Area Hospice, which is tax exempt.
If you choose, you can let us know that you’ve made these arrangements and we will consider you a member of our Legacy Society. Including your name in our list of members is entirely your choice. While some people like to be anonymous, others choose to be listed because it often will encourage others to arrange for a bequest as well.
Over the years, Brattleboro Area Hospice has been the recipient of several bequests which have been an enormous help in allowing us to reach out and serve hospice patients, their families, and the community.
Getting Advice:
Brattleboro Area Hospice cannot be your sole professional legal or accounting assistance in setting up these gifts, but we can discuss them with you in the early stages of consideration. Naturally we urge you to consider these gifts carefully with your financial advisor before making a commitment.
Acknowledging your gift:
With your permission, we would like to include acknowledgement of your gift, and your gift planning, in our Annual Report. Please let us know how you would like your name listed. In the case of a planned gift, please let us know if you will join us in the Legacy Society. If you prefer to be anonymous, we ask that you let us know in writing and we will honor your choice.
Thank you!
We are deeply grateful to all our generous friends who have supported Brattleboro Area Hospice over the years, making us a truly free service to all. We appreciate your thinking and planning to support us with a lifetime gift of any size.
