Welcome to Brattleboro Area Hospice's website, a source of information about hospice volunteer and bereavement services in southern Windham County, Vermont.

The hospice movement was founded on the belief that no one should die alone. As the 20th century progressed, the advent of technological advancements was a double edged sword: amazing innovations in medicine saved lives but also increased the number of people dying alone in hospitals surrounded by machines. Across the country, dedicated community members joined together to form hospices, training volunteers to provide compassionate hands-on care for their dying neighbors in their own homes.

In the ensuing years, the medical establishment embraced the hospice movement and produced many extraordinary achievements, such as successful pain management. However, the heart of Hospice lives on in volunteer hospices such as ours-small grassroots community agencies who are dedicated to the belief that each of us can be a companion to our neighbors who are facing the challenging journey of terminal illness or grief.

Our hope is that this website will be one of the many ways we assist our community. In addition to information regarding our services, we have provided a brief history of the hospice movement, a recommended reading list, and a monthly updated event calendar. We also offer links to a variety of sites dealing with hospice, bereavement, end of life issues, caregivers, specific diseases, advance care planning, art and healing, funerals and memorials.
